Questions, Questions

Of a recent date with Marga which ended in a major kiss, Butch wondered aloud: "I think I missed a lot when I knew her in college. Had Marga always been this hot?"

In reference to the same, um ... event, Marga asked me: "Does somebody else's tongue in your mouth really feel that gross?"

I wish I could tell them off: "Do I look like a fucking encyclopedia to you?"

If my patience had a limit, I think I'm a spit-throw away from it.

Replacement Girl?

While Butch and Marga are getting to know each other better, I must have unconsciously picked up camouflage for my bursting heart in the form of Tina*.

Tina is from Dumaguete originally. She has long, dark, hair that falls past the middle of her back. And as we all saw at the last company outing, she can fill out a bikini very well. She is charming, funny and very sweet. Tina works in accounting. I know of her because she processes my foreign travel liquidations. The rest of the office knows of her because every European and American expat in the building drools every time she walks by. I believe the term they use to describe her behind her back is "Expat Killer".

Weeks back, Tina and I emerged from the elevator on the cafeteria floor at the same time, one day after another -- which started a trend of sharing lunch tables. She hitched a ride with me once when uncharacteristically, I left the office early and she was rushing home to watch, ahem, "Darna" (a show she has never missed apparently). We share good-natured jokes about our company's ultra-serious and political corporate culture -- something others may not appreciate.

The next thing I know, the whole office thinks we're an item. I don't say much which leaves room for people to speculate what I'm thinking/feeling -- and I hate that. I can just imagine it: a few more days of "love advice" from the oldies in Accounting, and Tina may just start to think something's going on with us herself.

I know where I stand and that should be enough -- Tina is a good person and a good friend. That's it. And my actions have been consistent with how I feel, so there should be no room for confusion.

In the meantime, I am enjoying how my cash advances and liquidations are going through the bureaucracy in record time. As my best friend Leonardo (alias Dong) puts it: "Dude, you're seeing this chick for the money."

*not her real name.

It Has Begun

Marga and Butch started dating a few weeks back. I was out of town for work when they finally hooked up and was back in Manila the day they went out for the first time. I even got a nervous pre-date call from Marga -- Fate's way of rubbing it in my face, I suppose.

In my attempt to render my senses numb, I ran the length of Roxas Boulevard despite the harsh humidity. Twice. I got to my flat (just moved into a new place -- my first official bachelor pad -- another reason why I haven't posted in a while) at nine thirty, expecting to be exhausted out of my wits; but no, I was alert as hell. I showered, looked through my mail, called for pizza, read some magazines, and spent thirty minutes deciding between a "Lord of the Rings" or a "Matrix" DVD marathon. Past midnight, I was about to start on my family stuffed-crust meat lovers' pizza, when I got another call from Marga. This time, she was near tears. And since I couldn't shake that goddamn Kuya tendencies, of course, I drove to where she was to help.

I found Marga and Butch at a parking lot in the Fort in Makati. Butch couldn't see out his right eye, something was stuck in it. And since he couldn't wink either (yes, you heard me right -- the man could not WINK!), he couldn't keep the left eye open long enough to drive himself to a hospital. Marga couldn't drive; so they called me. They were both vague as to how Butch got this way, and I didn't push it.

The doctors declared it a "corneal abrasion" from sparkly dust -- the kind they use in kids' art projects. I declared that to be one of the weirdest date enders in history.

So that was Date Number One ...
