The Kontrabida

In response to my previous post, someone sent me an email saying, in gist, that I am the hero of "my movie" and that I should not feel like I'm a bit player in my own life.

Okaaay...

If I am the hero of "my movie", then the kontrabida has got to be Butch. No, he is not my stepbrother. No, he doesn't compel me to wash his boxers. No, he hasn't pushed me down a flight of stairs. But the fact that Marga has chosen to get to know him and spend time with him makes Butch the my romantic life's bane.

Butch is a far cry from Max Alavarado though. He is 5'10", reasonably fit, a good dresser, ocassionally amusing and according to Marga and Joanne, "cute" (Why do women use the same adjective to describe an attractive man and a small dog? Just wondering -- ). He is suitably competent as an account manager for the multi-national we work for. He comes from a good family -- comfortably moneyed. He drives several ... well, let's just say, he loses no sleep over MMDA's Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program.

On paper, Butch sounds like a guy women would readily agree to go on a blind date with. But in the few months that I've known him, my sentiment for him could only be described as distrust.

He's an okay guy most of the time. But I have seen he is capable of commonplace flagitiousness I personally detest. The small, frequent white lies to customers, delivered with ease. The padded expense claims. The careless, offensive remarks, masquerading as humor. The meanness to chauffers and waiters. The lack of compassion for people who live on the streets.

The man can be one giant gaping asshole. While I have known many giant, gaping assholes, this one is being pursued by the love of my life. So that makes him more objectionable than others.

Some Sick Telenovela Shit

Work is hectic. Been travelling quite a bit. Since my last enty, "other things" have progressed like a Mexican telenovela.

Marga, thanks to my recommendation, was accepted in the company where I work. The situation puts her in the same environment as Butch, the guy she wanted me to set her up with. Or so I thought.

Marga and Butch apparently know each other from college. And Marga, in an act I would not expect of her, wants to "get together" with Butch to get back at him for some ancient wrong. "Justice" as my sister puts it.

I don't want to have anything to do with this sick telenovela shit. Especially since my role will probably be the tall, handsome supporting actor who ends up getting shot or falling into a mine shaft mid-way through the season ...

Some People I Know

While people like me get a high from having the latest model cellphone in their backpocket (which can record video, organize schedules and very soon, cure the common cold) and a Pentium 4 Extreme, DSL-connected desktop waiting at home, others are not as handicapped.

Some people I know detest the ills that technology has done to the world.

Some people I know stay loyal to their ancient Ericsson T28 with a broken ringer, rationalizing that they prefer their mobile phones on perpetual vibrate mode anyway.

Some people I know text in unabbreviated correctly-spelled words; because to them, anything else would "feel wrong".

Some people I know have no television in their bedroom because they prefer to read. Ergo, they have not been polluted by a single reality show episode.

Some people I know are perversely intimidated by the Internet. They go on-line only to check their email. They do not sit in their office cubicles, masquerading blog surfing as work.

Some people are every unlike me. Very much like Marga.
